“Shantha Sevena”
Hospice care facility

‘Shantha Sevana’ was established in 1996 in Maharagama, adjacent to the National Cancer Institute, and it holds the distinction of being the very first hospice care facility in Sri Lanka. At the Shantha Sevana we offer free palliative care for terminally ill cancer patients, providing a safe and compassionate space to ensure dignity, comfort, and peace during the final stages of life.

Bandaranaike Memorial Cancer Homes

The Bandaranaike Memorial Cancer Homes serves as a comforting transit home and care facility for underprivileged cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or hematology treatment at the Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama.

Relief & Rehabilitation

Our Relief and Rehabilitation Program is dedicated to supporting approximately 125 needy cancer patients who, after being discharged from hospital care, are left without the basic resources or the emotional strength to return to normal life. These “outdoor” patients often face immense financial and psychological burdens, and we step in to help them rebuild with dignity.

Public Education & Awareness

We believe cancer is preventable – Raising Cancer awareness is an important part of our mission as it helps with early detection, which can dramatically improve the chances of successful treatment and survival. By understanding the risk factors, people can take proactive steps to reduce their risk, such as making healthier lifestyle choices.

“Shantha Sevena” Hospice care facility

Our facility includes separate male and female wards with 16 beds each, along with two air-conditioned private room for patients requiring additional comfort. Admission to Shantha Sevena is completely free of charge, with patients referred through oncologists from Apeksha Hospital.

At Shantha Sevena, our care philosophy is centered around relieving suffering and enhancing quality of life. We address the medical needs of our patients with a strong focus on pain alleviation and symptom control, utilizing treatments such as morphine injections, procured as needed from the Ministry of Health. Furthermore, we also attend to wound care, skin care, colostomy management and urinary catheter care. In an emergency the patient is transferred to Apeksha hospital. In the event of a death, the body is sent to the mortuary at Apeksha Hospital. All sterilization of instruments and linen, gauze are carried out at Apeksha Hospital.

A team of five qualified nurses ensures that each patient receives compassionate, round-the-clock care. In addition to medical attention, we provide wholesome and nutritious meals to all patients which is also free of charge.

Beyond physical care, we recognize the importance of emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Our programs include ‘Dhamma’ sermons, musical events, and other uplifting activities. We welcome patients of all faiths and backgrounds, who are encouraged to observe and practice their respective religions freely. At Shantha Sevena, we celebrate the National New Year, Christmas, Vesak, and World Hospice Day with special programs, creating moments of joy and community for our patients.
